New Year’s Eve in Newcastle

I’ve spent New Year’s Eve in London, Singapore, Lisbon and Wellington, but the most fun I ever had? Take a bow Newcastle upon Tyne, the UK’s party city extraordinaire.

Bear in mind that pretty much any Saturday night in Newcastle is like New Year’s Eve anywhere else – so many people, so few clothes, so much alcohol – but even so, the last night of the year brings a special spring to the Geordie step.

The amazing carnival parade (details on the official tourism website) turns the city centre into one huge jamboree, while fireworks light up one of Europe’s finest cityscapes and riversides. (You think I’m joking – but Sydney got its harbour bridge idea from somewhere, just saying).

Happy New Year Newcastle – and happy travels to you all.
